@stevecox: The Preloader’s color is black and if you make the background color also black, the image will not be visible.
Go to Appearance => Customize => Additional Css and add the following css.

   background-color: #fff000;
}

Please change the color-code (#fff000) if you would like to choose a different color.

@icolori : Please try to regenerate the thumbnails using this plugin and if the problem still persist then change the theme to default WordPress themes (Twenty Seventeen ) and check. If the image works fine with Twenty Seventeen theme let me know. If the image is still rotated in Twenty Seventeen theme, then its not a theme related issue.
