Goto Appearance=> Customize=> Additional CSS and remove following codes first:

#header-content {
    background-color: #D6F4D2;
}

and

#site-generator {
    background-color: #255519;
    color: #ffffff;
}

Then, add following code in same place:

#site-generator {
    background-color: #888888;
}

I have not changed other colors. Let me know how it goes.

I do not think what you say is possible with simple custom CSS or child themes modification. It will need quite a bit of modification as the next and previous buttons are generated dynamically.

Maybe you can find a plugin for it in http://wordpress.org/plugins, but I nave not come up with some kind of plugin.

Please consider hiring a customizer for this work.

For the mask option, the mask is in the background so I do not know which exactly is the section you are talking about. All things in the demo is achievable in pro theme. Please let me know via a screenshot and I can assist you further.

Thank you for mentioning the bug. We will fix the bug and add it back asap.

You can use all the functionality of theme options from Customizer(Appearance=> Customize) as well. It has all the features of theme options but with live preview.
