@michelg : To remove the date on the Featured Content. Go to Appearance => Customize => Additional css and add the following css.

.entry-meta .entry-date {
	display: none;
}

To replace the date by excerpt you will need to select Featured image content Under Content type and this feature is available in Pro theme only. Let me know if you have further issues.

@dbatty : Your site information will not be lost after updating the theme. If you have edited the theme files directly then only the changes will be lost. You have to make customizations using a child theme rather than directly editing the parent theme.

All our theme are updated on regular basis and we do not receive any complains regarding theme update. First take a full backup of your site before updating the theme in case if the update fails you can roll back to the previous theme.
