To change those text. Login to your WordPress Dashboard and then Go to “Appearance => Theme Options => Homepage Settings => Homepage Featured Content Options.

Then add in the image, title, description and links as per your need.

@CFarone: If you just want the slider and Featured Content. Then go to “Appearance => Theme Options => Homepage Settings => Homepage / Frontpage Settings”, uncheck “Enable Latest Posts or Page?”

@onebreath: Don’t customize the theme by editing the core theme files and functions. If you want to customize the theme then use the Theme Options panel and for css use “Custom CSS” box in Theme Option panel.

But if you want to further customize the theme then build child theme and do the editing in codes in your child theme.

If you haven’t customize the core files then you will not loose your customization.
