I am struggling to get actual comments (or preferably the first few words) under posts instead of a comment count and link.
I am using a plugin to select and display the posts with the comment count but the author suggests it might be the theme which is stopping comment content showing. Is that possible?

Thanks for your assistance.
Most posts and comments are in our private member forum but the first post in our public forum does have a comment/reply. The URL is https://www.ccrc.co.uk/public-forum/ where you can see at the bottom of the first post it says “1 reply” but you need to click this to see the individual post with the reply.
I am trying to get to show a bit more about the reply: ideally who it is from and the first few words.

I am afraid that is the default feature of WordPress. If you really need to change it I suggest you to hire a customizer to get it done.
