ParticipantThanks for responding.
If I set the front page to be “recent posts” I get the list of recent posts as expected, but I don’t want it as the default front page. I want it as a menu item so the user has to click on “~/blog/”. I want a static front page.
I have a menu item set up as “~/blog/” which gets a 404 error because there is no page with that slug.
All of the options seem to need me to give a page name or link to an existing slug.
I don’t know what value I need to set there to have “recent posts” show up instead of one of my pages or a specific post or category.
I made an empty page but I don’t know how to get that page to show recent posts.
Please tell me how to set it so that the default front page is my static page and when someone clicks on “~/blog/~ they get the recent posts view.

Keymaster@brianlowelogic-com: Okay, for this, first of all, create a page with no content and name it “Blog”, it not necessary it should be blog but just for simplicity. Then go to Dashboard=> Appearance=> Customize=> Static Front Page and select A static page in Front page displays option. Then select your desired home page in Front page option and blog page(that we just created) in Posts page.

ParticipantThanks for this. It worked, but I’m confused.
The new blank page I created, which I called “Blog” has no content except the “Blog” title, and yet if I set this page as the “Posts” option my visitors correctly get the index of recent posts instead of my blank page. It must be magic.

Keymaster@brianlowelogic-com: I checked your site, seems you have selected Your latest posts in Front page displays. Please use A static page instead and then select any Page you want do display as Home page and select Blog page in Posts page.
Let me know if any problem.Regards,

ParticipantYou’re right. The front page is now ‘recent posts’. I left it that way while I was working on the site rather than have a static page and no blog, and now the site owner has decided that works better than the static home page previously in place.
C’est la vie!
At least I know now how to achieve was I was aiming for, even if it’s not wanted on this particular site.
Thanks for your help anyway!

ParticipantOMG, @Mahesh you are a life saver. I have been trying for two weeks to figure out why my home page is displaying 404 in the area the blog posts should read. I had to go select the blog category in settings then it worked as expected. Thank you thank you thank you.

ParticipantHello,
My blog posts are not showing up either. I have designated “News & Updates” as my posts page (and it shows this in the dashboard), but it will always come up as an error 404 when I click on that from the menu.

Any insights??
Thanks,

@markthack: Go to Dashboard=> Appearance=> Customize=> Static Front Page and make sure you’ve selected “News & Updates” page in Posts page option.
If the problem persists, go to Dashboard=> Settings=> Permalinks and click Save Changes and try again.
Let me know if any problem.Regards,

Participant@Mahesh: I confirmed that “News & Updates” is selected for the posts page option and then saved the Permalinks in the Settings section as well with no change. Still showing Error 404 when I click on the News & Updates tab. It’s strange because the Recent Posts shows on the footer widget but the News & Updates page always shows the error.
Do I have to change any of the settings in the Permalinks?
Thanks for your help with this.

Keymaster@markthack: Please try changing the theme and check if the issue persists. If the problem persists, try creating a new page and try with that one. Let me know further.

Participant@Mahesh: I changed the theme and the blog linked worked just fine and showed the content properly. But after changing back, it went back to showing the error 404 when I click on the link. Tried creating a new page and making that page the posts page but still getting the same error. 🙁

Keymaster@markthack: Do you have any plugins installed? If yes, try deactivating theme and try again.

Participant@Mahesh: I tried that with no success. Would I lose everything if I deleted the theme and then reinstalled it?

Participant@Mahesh: Still not working deleting the theme and reinstalling. The Recent Posts widget in the footer works fine. Any way to move that think into the main menu?
Thanks,

Keymaster@markthack: Moving the widget to menu, not its not possible. Pages, posts, category and custom links are fine but not widgets. If its okay we need to check for the issue on your server. We’ll contact you through an email shortly.

Keymaster@markthack: Thanks, just check your site, and I found what was causing the issue. Go to Dashboard=> Appearance=> Customize=> Theme Options=> Homepage/Frontpage Options, you have selected Uncategorized. And since there were no posts in Uncategorized category, it was displaying 404 error. Now I’ve selected all the categories and now the posts are showing correctly in New & Update page.
In the next update, you’ll have All Categories options, with which you won’t have to select all categories again for showing all categories in the post list.Regards,
