@baldwinjackson: What you can do is create two child themes to create 2 different design for the same website.
You can activate one child theme for one design and activate another child theme for the other design. You can use Generate Child Theme Plugin to create Child Themes.

Yes you can social media buttons to the top of header as well.
Go to => Appearance => Customize => Menus => View All Location => Select you Menu under Social Top Menu.

Do you mean to reduce the height of the header?

Well, pro themes have additional features compared to the free theme. You can check-out the additional-features available in the pro theme. Then you can make your decision to upgrade to pro
