    “Some” of the featured images are being trimmed down automatically from 275×275 to 275×197.

    How can the 275×275 dimension be maintained when displayed in the ‘featured content” section

    For that you will need to create a child theme and do a little bit of customization. Let me know if you are familiar with child theme customization so that I can guide you.
