How do I do this?

What size should the image be?

@maevamena: If you want to add background to header then add the following css in “Custom CSS” box in your Theme Options panel. Change the image url as per your need.
#hgroup-wrap { background: url("http://66.147.244.179/~wendybow/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/cover-206x300.jpg") repeat scroll 0 0 transparent; }
