I checked your site and the image size of the featured image of Portaits & People  is 1920x2848px. The height of your image is huge to be horizontally placed. Please  try using an image that has a width bigger that its height.

To remove the images from Featured Content section

Go to => Appearance => Customize => Additional CSS and add the following CSS Code.

#featured-content-section .post-thumbnail {
display: none;
}

You should be able to order the featured content article from the customizer itself.
