Im not sure how you have your menu setup, but generally you can get around that by setting up a menu in Appearance > Menu. Then for the top parent use a “link” not a page or category. Then you can use a link like: http://www.firstfacility-belville.net/# Which will basically do nothing when you click on it. Hope this helps.
I think this is a great theme. I build my site a Dorr Michigan Business directory, using this theme and have coded my own child them. I have not really ran into any issues regarding fonts or colors. There are plenty of plugins if you aren’t sure how to css it yourself.
I was able to make child theme easily using the One-Click Child Theme plugin.
