Hi I have cracked it, found I can add a image for the events calendar in the settings section and that resolves the page not displaying the featured image, and for the blog posts page I have updated the site with the Content View plugin and created a new blog viewing page to use in place of the default, this give me additional filtering options on categories which simplifies things too.
