    Hi,
    Can I update the theme via the wp admin and not loose my theme setting and not loose the data in the Custom CSS Styles box?

    What is the best practices method to update the theme?

    @cowboy-mike: Yes, you can either update the theme from WP Admin or from FTP. But works fine and it will not effect your custom CSS and theme settings.
