I want categories for my blog posts. I created a new category. And I added category widget to the Blog page.
In the post edit for one post, I selected Blog for the “‘primary” category and also selected the new category.
But when I go to the Blog page and select the new category from the widget, I get this message “opps. that page cannot be found.” What do I need to do?
Also – how do I change the order of the categories in the widget?
Thanks!May 2, 2016 at 10:45 am #90840PratikParticipantHI @[email protected],
What you have done is the way to do it. Can you check the post and see if the post belongs to the new category? To change the order of categories, it is possible, but that support falls outside our theme support scope. I would recommend to find a plugin that can achieve this in WordPress.org Plugins repo

However when I select the category in the widget for categories I get this message “opps. that page cannot be found.” What do I need to do? When i select a category in the widget does it go to a new page (other than the main blog page)? Do I need to create that page?
About changing the order of the categories in the widget – do you think deleting all the categories and then putting them back in the order I want might do that? You can move select and drag items in the widget admin area so it seems very odd you can’t change the order of categories without a plug in.
thanks!

You always can help me – this is a big problem.
I was trying to re-order my categories by deleting them and adding them again.
Now when I select the blog page I get error 404 page not found even though I’ve got posts categorized for the blog page.
I don’t see anything wrong when I “edit” the blog page. Also – for other posts I selected Blog for the “‘primary” category and also selected the new category.
But when I select the new category from the widget, I get this message “opps. that page cannot be found.” What do I need to do?Thanks!

Can you change the permalink by going to Dashboard=> Settings=> Permalinks to any other and then see if the 404 errors go away. You can revert to your old settings afterwards. This will rewrite your .htaccess files.
May 3, 2016 at 11:01 am #90903hhurstParticipantI don’tknow what this means: rewrite .htaccess files.
When I go to Dashboard=> Settings=> PermalinksI see nothing I can change.
May 3, 2016 at 11:11 am #90905hhurstParticipantI am concerned about the lost blog page.
I was trying to re-order my categories by deleting them and adding them again including the blog page category.
Now when I select the blog page I get error 404 page not found even though I’ve got posts categorized for the blog page.
I don’t see anything wrong when I “edit” the blog page.I lost my blog page trying to fix it this question which wasn’t answered:
For some posts, I selected Blog for the “‘primary” category and also selected the new category.
But when I select the new category from the widget, I get this message “opps. that page cannot be found.” What do I need to do?
Thanks!May 3, 2016 at 11:42 am #90906PratikParticipantIn you Settings=> Permalinks page, you should have options as in this image: https://codex.wordpress.org/File:permalink-settings.png
Just change it to any other option than your current option.
For lost blog page: let me know what pages and options you have selected under Settings=> Reading=> Front Page Displays
For the answer, please follow the steps, the error occurs sometimes due to permalinks. If you do not know what permalink is, then just change the option that I have described.
May 3, 2016 at 11:43 am #90907PratikParticipantLets solve this one by one, its confusing as you are describing several issues at once.

May 3, 2016 at 11:50 am #90911hhurstParticipantI changed the permanlink setting from “post name” to “day and name” and saved it but the blog page did not appear. So I changed it back.
May 3, 2016 at 11:54 am #90914PratikParticipantCan you check your email, I sent an email at [email protected]
May 3, 2016 at 12:40 pm #90921PratikParticipantHi @hollyeh,
First, for blog page, it was showing error page because you had not select any category in “Appearance=> Customize=> Theme Options=> Homepage/FrontPage settings”, so there was no posts to be displayed.
Second, for the Category Links, there is some issue with Permalinks. I changed to plain and everything seems to work fine. Please remove the “New Post” for testing purposes. To make other permalink settings work, you will need to contact your server or a professional as this is outside our theme support scope.
Let me know if all the issues are resolved or not.
Lastly, it is recommended to upgrade all themes and plugins to latest version. Since there are quite a few plugins(48 active and 17 needed updates), please seek professional help for this. There is a great risk of being hacked if the themes and plugins are not updated.

PratikMay 3, 2016 at 12:43 pm #90922hhurstParticipantThank you.
But my page urls are not what I made them.
All of them are different now.
This can be a problem with searches.May 3, 2016 at 12:46 pm #90923PratikParticipantHi @hollyeh,
I can give you a hint as there is problem with .htaccess generation when changing permalinks and this is server level issue, so to solve it, you need to contact your server or someone with that kind of knowledge.

I set up each page url and now they are different.
I don’t understand this.
I would like the urls to be what they were.May 3, 2016 at 1:34 pm #90932hhurstParticipantI changed the permalink settings back to “post name” so I have my page and post urls the way I had them before.
But now when I select a category, the page for that cateogry does not appear. It says “oopps that page can’t be found.”
There is nothing in the directions online about making categories that suggests I need to change all my urls – including for all pages – in order to have post cateories. It looks like each cateogry needs a page – so the question is – how do I create a category that shows some selected posts? I have the posts in the categories and I have added the categories in the Posts/ categories.
I just need simple directions for setting up cateories of posts so they appear both on the main blog page and the cateogry page.May 3, 2016 at 2:22 pm #90937PratikParticipantI do not know what you mean – it is too technical.

I would like the urls to be what they were. Please hire a professional if this is not understood. I have even degubbed your error and given you the results and this is not Theme Related Issue.

There is nothing in the directions online about making categories that suggests I need to change all my urls – including for all pages – in order to have post cateories.I have said it again and again, there is issue with the permalinks. I have even shown you that it is solved when you use Plain Permalinks. This is not an issue related with the theme itself.
It looks like each cateogry needs a page – so the question is – how do I create a category that shows some selected posts? I have the posts in the categories and I have added the categories in the Posts/ categories.
I just need simple directions for setting up cateories of posts so they appear both on the main blog page and the cateogry page. This is indeed possible but will be too technical.
1. This is usually achieved by the method that is not working for your site.
2. Another way is to make a page template and control the posts via WP_Query. For this, you will need detailed knowledge about following:
* Child Theme
* Page Templates
* Ref: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/template-files-section/page-template-files/page-templates/
* Ref: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/creating-custom-page-templates-in-wordpress/May 3, 2016 at 10:15 pm #90960hhurstParticipantThank you but my theme allows for post categories so it should be “working for my (your) site.” The question is how to set that up?
Under post you can “add new category” and you can assign a “parent” which I would assume can be my main blog page.
Each post can be assigned several categories and “parent” categories which I assume I could always make my main blog page.
It would seem to be a step by step process. What may be missing is creating an actual page for each category but I haven’t read anything about that.
From these indications this should be easy and have nothing directly to do with re-assigning urls for all pages which changes links and searches. You said it is “not a theme related issue” but also it “is not working for your site”. There must be just a simple missing step – or else there would be be “post categories” and “add new category” to select. Thank you.May 4, 2016 at 2:47 am #90970hhurstParticipanti finally figured this out thru trial and error. It isn’t a clear process.
It does involve the permalinks but you don’t have to use “plain permalinks” as the solution. Since it involves permalinks this step to creating categories is buried however the solution is simple once you know where to find it. Here is how I did it thru trial and error:
Under Settings – Permalinks
There I selected Post Name – which is how I had it before – and which preserves my page & post links.
Under “Optional” I typed in “topics” for the “category base.”
This sets up the categories urls to include the name of the category as a “topic” which apparently creates a page for the posts under that category.
Without this step the post were not showing up in categories. Its simple but not obvious. At least to this novice. I just kept trying until something worked. -
