I have a child theme and I need to add code into footer.php. Should I copy the footer.php from my parent theme and open a new template in my child theme? If so, how do I do this?

@klhaight: Yes sure either you can just edit the footer.php file in your child theme or you can dd with the help of action hook in your functions.php file in your child theme.
