The breadcrumbs are not following the menu hierarchy

e.g. should be Home > menu item > submenu item

Instead it is showing Home > submenu item.

I believe it is following the wordpress page hierarchy NOT the menu. My pages do not have the parent / child structure as I want to have simpler URLs, eg not example.com/parent-1/child-1 but example.com/child-1

Is it possible to do this with the inbuilt breadcrumbs (as with Yoast breadcrumbs)

@voodoochill: Breadcrumb follows the page hierarchy. To get what you want you will need to get your site customized. I suggest you to hire a customizer.
