    I remove the 3rd column buy putting no widgets in but the centre part does not fill across, it leave empty space.
    How can I make the centre part fill the area between the left side and the right sidebar?

    OK, Figured this out. There are actually two places to set the template and if you check it in the theme customisation then it disables the options on the Page.
    To make this clear the options should become non-selectable if the customised settings override them.
