Thanks for the info Mahesh. I’m sure the pro version is awesome but this is for a simple blog site right now, paid theme is a bit of a stretch.

I’ve solved this for the moment by using a page redirect to the destination post with the “Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin” addon. Adding featured image and post snippet in the redirect page is brought through to the featured content widget ok.
