Is it possible with the free theme to change the site tile font to a Google font? I can see I can change the font size in CSS but changing the actual font does not appear to work.

The Font Family Option is only available in pro version of the theme. You can check out the additional-features available in pro version of the theme.

With the pro version is it possible to use an image (png..jpg) in place of the site title? I.e. not use a font at all?

Yes thank you. We’re just having a rethink of the site and various questions get put to me even though that idea might not be used!
Is there a handy comparison sheet show the difference between the free and pro version anywhere so I don’t have to keep bothering you?
