I was looking at the Catch Solid Construction theme, but the style of the Flames theme appeals more in regard to the visuals and intended use.

Looking at the settings in Solid Construction demo I see that the testimonials are implemented via the plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/essential-content-types/ which in theory will work with any theme.

So can it be implemented in the same way in the Catch Flames (Free) theme?

I’d like to build the site in the free version but am definitely looking at possibly purchasing the pro version subsequently, if it looks largely as I want in the free version.

(As an aside where can I find the free vs pro version features comparison please?)

I already bought a couple of Catch Pro themes for other sites too.

The testimonial feature is available in the customizer in Solid Construction Theme but not in Catch Flames Theme. So in order to implement testimonial in Catch Flames you will need to make use of testimonial short code and place theme on any post/page where you want the testimonial section. For instruction regarding testimonial short code follow this link.

For the free vs pro version feature of our themes you can click on compare tab of the theme link. For Catch Flames it is https://catchthemes.com/themes/catch-flames/#compare.

I tried that essential content types but as far as I can see there isn’t any way of formatting the testimonials to look good – just a set font etc?

By comparison the way they look in the construction theme I mentioned is much better.

Am I missing something as far as the plugin goes?

The testimonial section is not available in the customizer in Catch Flames but is available in Solid Construction Theme that is why it looks better in Solid Construction Theme.

The Plugin gives you Custom Post Types like Featured Content, Testimonial and so on so that they can be used instead of post or pages.
