Widgets in the wrong place?!

Hi i hope someone can help. Every time i add a widget, in the form of an ad or otherwise to my site, they end up appearing at the bottom of the page and not down the right hand side where i have placed them in the widget section of wp. Does anybody know how i can get them to appear down the right hand side? i have set the page as 2 columns, so i dont see where the problem could be. Also i would like to link one of my pages to one of the main three widgets at the top of my home page, but i am struggling to link them to a category. can somebody tell me how i can get my posts featured in these widgets?
