Why use Featured Image? Can it be smaller?

Sakin, I know you stress that CatchEvolution is set up to work w/Featured Images. I would rather stress the text, with an image merely being there to embellish and/or explain the text. Should I make one of these images into a Featured Image? Does it have to be so big?
