Why do i have to pay a yearly license?

Hi all, today i got an e-mail with the information to renew my license. At least i thought i would only pay one time for the theme and so i checked the invoice from the purchase. There was now hint that it is about a yearly renewal. I really don't get it ... if its true it's a real bad thing.
