Video in post not embedded on homepage

We are using the standard post format because there is no video format option. When we publish a post with an embedded vimeo video it embeds correctly on the homepage if the only thing in the post is the video. If we add text (a transcript) underneath the video then the video does not embed on the homepage. How can we embed a vimeo video with the transcript text underneath and have the video embed on the homepage excerpt?
