Video embedding

Hi I don't know if this is a problem with the theme or with Wordpress, but when I embed YouTube videos I am unable to format the sizing, start point, etc. I've tried three different plugins that build in short codes to allow formatting, but none work. The formatting gets stripped out or appears as text in place if the video. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
