testimonals on home page

Hi, I am not sure if this is a theme or plugin issue. I have the Essential Content Types added to the site and have added testimonials to it. In the Customizer I have made space for 8 testimonials to show on the home page but no options show in the dropdowns. I can't find any instructions beyond this. what am I missing? Thank you
