Slider causing problems with submenu

I am using a featured image slider on every page with the main menu located directly above the slider. When I try to click on the submenu that drops down over the slider, the submenu disappears and the featured image navigation arrows appear. This doesn't always happen but it does most of the time. ie, the slider is being activated instead of the submenu. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
