Setting a different homepage other than the demo

I am trying to use Elementor to edit the default demo homepage and it is not working.  Therefore, I have been trying for a long time to change the homepage to a regular static page which I can edit in Elementor.  I created a new basic page, and then went to "settings, reading, and set my new homepage" however it is not showing when I visit my website.  Regardless of what I do, I cannot change the homepage to a blank page.  I have tried to clear cache and more.  Nothing is working...
