scaling images in everest

I am using the everest theme on wp 3.5.1 http://dfthdev.atwebpages.com/213/ Google page speed insights is telling me that image scaling on the images in the post slider and featured front page content is being re-sized by the html or the css and looks to be taking lots of resources. is this unavoidable when using these special features?
