Putting the featured image on the slider NOT behind the excerpt

Hi! On my slider (which is set to show posts with a specific category) the featured image shows up behind the text. I can move the image around by floating it, but the text still shows all the way across the slider, and over the image. How can I make it so the image "pushes" the text to the side? Thanks!
