Portfolio options not working properly

Hello, I am trying to set up a portfolio page. I created the page, then went to customize>theme options>portfolio. Under "number of items to show" I have entered 12. The draft page shows 12 slots for portfolio images, but the theme options area does not update past "Portfolio #3" Please help me to get this corrected. Thank you
