page width changes if I turn off sidebar

Hey, I'm opting to turn off the sidebar on certain pages...but doing so makes the overall page width decrease. I presumed the page width would stay the same, and that the main content area would simply expand to use the rest of the space (which is what I want to happen). I've searched for css code to make this happen, but nothing has worked. Hope you can help! Thanks! E!
