old PHP version required?

When I updated my site from High Responsive Free to High Responsive Pro, I started getting an error message. My webhost company found that the theme was now requiring PHP 5.3. This is an old end of life version of PHP, so it poses a security risk and also disables plug-ins that I have been using. Why does the Pro version cause this problem when the free version did not.
