Not able to add gallery to home page

I am on the default home page and can not add an image gallery or slider. I can to all other pages. Apparently, I can by going to "Customize" on my wp admin page but that option is not showing? When I edit the template there is no option to add a slider either as per an article I just read on this site? Can anyone advice? Thanks
