No image in excerpt style

Hi, I want to set my layout to blog excerpt style, but when I do I can't see the image at the top of my post in the excerpt style. I tried setting the image as the "featured image," which worked but the image was resized much smaller and was no longer centered. Basically, I want the excerpt to look exactly like the post after you click "continue reading", but only show a paragraph or two of text under the image. Any suggestions?
