Missing something with static page setup

I've read through just about every article/post regarding this. Even though I have created pages for Home and Blog in Settings/Reading and set to static page it is still displaying as a post (ie it is displaying a page I called "about"). I've tried deleteing and creating my "home" page using an image but still have that "about" page showing. My "home" page shows up way down near where a footer would be. Suggestions? going a bit crazy here! lol I'm sure it is a simple fix.
