Limit Featured content on home page

I want to show 3 colums featured content on my homepage. When I add a page and see the preview, there is the full content of the page visible. I just want three or four lines visible with "Read more" or something. Otherwise, it takes the whole page an my theme doesnt look good. What can I do?
