Issue with setting up homepage – need help

The site i'm working on is a client's personal blog: kimametcalf.com On the site demo homepage, and on other's i have seen, the content underneath the projects section has a gray border around it and what seems like a header image that populates about 50% of the white box that contains the home page text. However, on this site, I cannot seem to get that to happen. I've applied a featured image to my home page's content, but the image doesn't show up and the content is full screen. I've tried to fix it as best I could with css but I don't know how to get the image & home page text to display as it does in the demo, this is very important as the owner of the blog wants an image of herself there to introduce herself.
