increase the overall width of single column layout

I'd like to increase the overall width of the single column layout as it's a little "thin" for our taste. I've created a child theme (bear with me I've only been using wordpress for 20 minutes) and tried adding: [code]#content {width 90%};[/code] but doesn't make any difference. help pwease! www.insightndt.co.uk/wordpress
