How to keep header media from turning grey and/or place image in site title

When I upload a photo as header media it becomes gray in all the white areas.  Is there a way to fix this?   Also is possible to just use my own image as top media by putting it above the little icon on the front page or getting rid of the little icon all together?  Thank you   http://atxhousefairies.com/
