How to get a page of posts with thumbnails to left of excerpts

I am trying to get a page of posts with small thumbnails on the left and blog excerpts on the right. Right now page of posts show a large image above the excerpt. Any advice how I can make the post's featured image appear to the right and smaller? How do I set it's size?
