How to add a read more button

I am helping with a site (www.rosscummings.com) and I wish to add a read more button.  The result so far is the wordpress readmore doesn't work, I seem I am unable to add javascript without it throwing "uncaught referenceerror function is not defined" and other plugins do not work either.   So how do I do it? Thank you   Charlie
