How can I change the colour of my menu bar

Hi there I am a wordpress newbie (sorry) I would like to know how to change the colour of my menu bar as it doesnt seem to be an obvious option. I would also like to know how to hid the comments and archive sections on the left panel - even though I have turned them off...or so I thought. I look forward to your help Alex
