featured content problems

I have problems with the featured content functionality What I want is a four column featured content with news and pages. The problem is that featured content demands a picture. This is a problem for a pager without picture or a Vimeo movie in combination with a featured slider. It demands to upload a featured image. Problem now is that =he featured image is visible on the page. You get: 1. featured slider and 2 featured image. That is not a good visible combination. What I should like is: a featured slider that is not visible on a certain page or a featured image that is visible in the featured content on the frontpage but not on the page that should be in the featured content functionality.
