Featured content not showing up

Hi, I am trying out this theme and find that even though three featured content items have been created, and three specified in the customizer, the three items aren't showing up to be selected. I had this problem with another theme and don't know what the cause was as one of you logged in to resolve it. The site is hidden behind a 'coming soon' plugin. how can I fix this? Thank you
