featured content images

Hi I'm working on a site with 3 featured content images/excerpts on home page. Can I get any control of the part of the image which is displayed on featured content area please? It's taking a crop of the header images from the individual pages but doesn't look good. Do I need pro for this or am I missing how to achieve this. Also my friend who I'm building the site for would like me to put a couple of additional logos in the header area near the contact/social icons.
