Featured Content Featured Image

After creating some featured content areas in the customizer and seeing it work fine with the default image on my homepage. I then set a featured image for the page to replace the default image. This causes the corresponding home page area to break. Displaying a blank area in that row with no image or title, nothing. What am I doing wrong?
