does the theme work with block widgets?

Hello. I needed to update my primary sidebar and now cannot control which widgets (or blocks) are showing up. I am using classic editor, but tried blocks for widgets under appearance. When I "update" it's the wrong stuff. What to do to get back on track? I wanted to go with blocks but it is not working. Please let me know. Jim
