Does it support get_the_post_thumbnail() function to set featured image by url?

I'd like to try this plugin to set featured image by url to save time. How can I tell if the theme supports the get_the_post_thumbnail()? http://epicplugins.com/external-url-link-to-featured-images/ Or does anyone know of another solution to set featured image by url?
