Dashboard not showing anything in "screen options"

I am trying to select which column appear in the dashboard showing all posts. I need to remove a few columns to leave room so the titles and longer sections don't wrap and take up half the page. When I hit the arrow to pul down the "Screen Options" menu in the upper right of all of the dashboard windows, that box that it plus down is empty. From what I can tell from other forums this is where column selection happens. I have not options in my pull down window, it is completely blank. Thanks for any help.
